The Program on Applied Demographics (PAD) brings skills in demographics, economics, statistics, data gathering and data analysis together to provide a variety of organizations with data, information and advice. PAD works closely with the New York State Department of Economic Development, the U.S. Census Bureau and other organizations to assist them in their activities. http://pad.human.cornell.edu/index.cfm
Examples of PAD's activities:
New York Statistical Information System (NYsis)
NYsis activities focus on demographic analysis of New York State, its regions, communities and neighborhoods. Its core demographic work is funded by a contract with the New York State Department of Economic Development. The NYsis initiative includes:
- Research, evaluation and production of population estimates and projections.
- Representing New York State in the US Census Bureau's Federal-State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates (FSCPE) and Projections (FSCPP).
- One of the FSCPE tasks is providing the Census Bureau with an annual Group Quarters Report. Group Quarters are facilities where multiple unrelated people reside and receive provided services. The precise location of Group quarters is essential for an accurate Group Quarters Report. Regional and county planners and others are helping us improve our knowledge of Group Quarters' locations. For that purpose, we developed an application on Google maps along with a description of the application.
- Providing technical training and assistance on demographic matters to state, regional and local planning agencies.
Regional Economic Development
Matching regional demographic characteristics (the supply of human resources) with the employment demands of regional businesses gives insight in opportunities and bottlenecks for the regional labor market. Data from the Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) is combined with data from the most recent Census and the American Community Survey (ACS) to provide these insights.
Consumer Demographics and Market Strategies (CDMS)
Consumer Demographics and Market Strategies (CDMS) promotes economic development by improving the knowledge of consumer oriented businesses regarding the markets in which they compete. Focus on consumer oriented businesses addresses two major components of the economic development process; first, to increase the export of goods and services to other regions; second, to substitute locally produced goods and services for those imported from other regions.
